barbarian queens wearing golden armbands
thanked the gods for their good fortune:
they may have reigned over just a few muddy fields
and gnarled fruitless forests,
but they played their part well enough
to put this age to shame.

And you should be ashamed.
Don’t you realize that you’re hiding your eyes
from the same sunlight that once hit
the bared chests of the ancients?
